… back to school

School starts on Monday and I’m actually excited. Up until Friday, I was worried that I wasn’t going to really get excited about school starting.

I was wrong! Thankfully.
Our school's Open House was last night and my excitement for seeing my new & old students came rushing back.
I was so proud to add my cheerleader's trophies & awards from this summer's camp in the trophy case and see them again! These middle school girls are the sweetest things – they've already started asking about practices and games.

Last week, I wrote about prepping for school, expectations, and the triad that sets everyone up for a successful school year for Houston Style Magazine.

20130817-070317.jpg I can be a bit hard core in the classroom and with my students. I expect so much from them because I work so hard to make sure they’re successful. Thankfully, we have parents and expectations rooted in our legacy that guide every student that walks through our doors.

As educators, we all know that every child will not be on Honor Roll or make all A’s and E’s – however, my expectation is that you work hard and do your best.

I’m hoping that this year as we prepare to send our kiddos back to school that we are focused on our kids doing their best. Yes. I want my class (with a combined effort of each of them) to be the best 2nd grade class in all areas. Yes, we push them. We work with them. We encourage and set the bar high. But, we have to remember that each child is different, they each have different motivations and skill levels.

Even though our intentions are the best, we hurt more than we help when we create unhealthy competitions & comparisons between siblings & classmates, when we push them further than they can go at the moment, & set bars higher than they can reach.

Education is a journey & so are these nine months we spend in the classroom. If we each work hard, the parents/family, student, & teacher, every single day- we will accomplish great things.

I pray (in Jesus’ name!!! :)) that we walk through the doors of our schools and classrooms prepared for a new, fresh beginning and ready to work hard every single day. We’ll be successful. We’ll be patient with each other. We’ll do our best and treat each other well.

… teaching

Never, ever in a million years did I want to be a teacher.

But, here I am.

I enjoy it. I learn from it. I grow. I endure. I expand. I aspire. I am educated and humbled because of what I choose to do on a daily basis.

And, it is hard.

But, most rewarding.

Teaching as a profession is so much more than depositing information into the minds of little people who begin the school year with a lot less knowledge than they end it with.

It’s seeing something special, worthwhile, and unique in a child who doesn’t see much inside themselves.

20130529-150231.jpg

It’s inspiring children who have low expectations of themselves to want greater than they thought possible.

It’s encouraging a few children to do something, most children to more, and all children to their best.

It’s knowing what your limits are…. Knowing your boundaries lie…. So, that you can do as much teaching, encouraging, and inspiring as you can.

For me, I have to eat and have a to do list. If I’m hungry with a load to do surrounding children who have a thousand questions, a few hundred tattles, and not one obedient desire in their little hearts – I easily go left. Far left. And, raise my voice. Fuss. Roll my eyes. Huff. Ignore. And, become incredibly impatient.

That’s not who God calls me to be when I walk into my classroom everyday.

I believe as a teacher, I am to help develop these kiddos who sit in my classroom everyday into people of great character.

I am to model equality. Patience. Grace. Mercy. Joy. Peace. Forgiveness. Love.

And,
Good grammar.

I give hugs. I compliment. I play. I model. I color. I create. I correct. I challenge.

I do the best I can.

Everyday.

And, I am glad to say that that “everyday” will end tomorrow at 1:30p.

I hope every teacher across this wide, open country of ours has the most spectacular summer imaginable.

20130529-145439.jpg

I hope you get raises.

I hope you feel blessed, treasured, and appreciated.

I hope you recognize the enormity of the efforts you put into every lesson you teach daily.

I hope you recognize your impact and how necessary you are.

… here’s to allllll of the students we teach every year, that grab our hearts, and those few who give you more than a reason to come to work everyday.

They are why we do what we do.

… must. focus.

I have to say that I’m quite proud of myself for sticking with working out this long…… and for me, 5 months of working out consistently is a great feat. For the past couple of weeks, I have only been able to work out once a week during the work week and then the weekends come and I’m so exhausted from Monday – Friday that I couldn’t imagine exerting energy to do anything else.

BUT!!!!!

The summer commeth and I am tooo thrilled because I plan on hitting the gym SO! hard it is ridiculous. I am a bit disappointed because although I can tell I’m getting stronger and have lost a good percentage of body fat, I don’t see the muscle mass I’d like to see. Which means MORE weight on the bar and getting back to organizing my schedule in a way that allows me to hit the gym more often!

One thing I KNOW we must do is continue to work on our eating habits. We’ll do well for a little bit then fall off for a little bit. It’s our little cycle that we’ve got to stop. Another exciting aspect of summer is that we have so much more time to cook!! I love to try new recipes over the summer because I actually have time to find a recipe I want to try, mentally prepare, grocery shop, then prepare the meal. It’s a big deal. I’m not a very good “throw it together” kind of cook. That’s Thomas’ arena! Me, I’m a cook book/app gather all of the recipes, measuring spoons/cups, and everything you’ll need to cook with and cook everything one at a time- althought I’m getting better – kinda gal. I’m telling you it’s a process so when I have TIME….

Soooo…. all of this to say, I have two goals…
Goal #1: hit the gym incredibly hard over the next few weeks!
Goal #2: healthy eating, snacking, and healthIER cheating!

I’ll keep you up to speed on my progress!!!!
…. and for accountabilities sake, I am going to gym tomorrow and increasing my weight!!!

…. here’s to heavier commitment and increased muscle mass!!!!
