the rock

charlesOne of my greatest lessons of 2015 was watching the blessings of God unfold before me because of the waves that slammed me into
The Rock.

In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; Let me never be ashamed;
In Your righteousness deliver me. Incline Your ear to me, rescue me quickly;
Be to me a rock of strength, A stronghold to save me.
For You are my rock and my fortress;
For Your name’s sake You will lead me and guide me.

{Psalm 31: 1 – 3}

The Lord is our rock…. the provider of safety, comfort, protection, provision, forgiveness…. he freely and unconditionally gives love, peace, mercy, and grace. We can freely go to him to any of these things and more. He is the provider of every possible need & spiritually, emotionally, or physically.

Just as we wouldn’t expect our children to be ashamed of asking us to meet a need or how we encourage them to tell us what they want, the because of Christ’s death and resurrection, we are redeemed and forgiven….  able to come before the Lord with confidence. As parents, we often give to our babes out of our love for them knowing that “s/he’ll really like this…”- the Lord does the same for us as his children. He withholds no good thing from us.

And, because of all. of. that there’s no shame in being so broken and hurt that you aren’t strong enough to stand before him. Sometimes, we make our way to the Lord on all fours, crawling, then laying in the fetal position at his feet. But, as he strengthens us, as our perspectives are focused more on who He is than what is going on around us, we’re able to stand on that Rock. With boldness and confidence.

It’s only in God that we’re able to stand firm in any situation and speak his truths back to him… we’re able to allow those truths affirm who he is and who we are in him. And, we can pray, praise, and worship in a place of confidence, keeping our eyes on Him versus taking all of our hard stuff back and worrying about it. Allowing it to cripple us, weaken us, and distract us.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

As in any relationship, there are moments when our weaknesses and fears are exposed and shared. It’s only in the safety of that space  we’re able to openly share our deepest regrets, dreams, hopes, and embarrassments. It’s also in those moments, we’re creating depth and building trust.

That trust, depth, and honesty is what the Lord longs for with us. He is our Comforter, our Provider, our Peace, and our Refuge. He also rejoices over us with singing, gives us good gifts, and loves us immensely, he knows us.

We know that our battles and struggles, hurts, and disappointments aren’t with flesh and blood but against darkness…. So, have you considered that what God is truly protecting us against is evil? Like, the devil. The rulers of darkness. I’m thinking that just as we won’t ever be able to comprehend the fullness of God’s goodness, love, and grace, we will never be able to comprehend the level of evil that is in darkness. But, we don’t have to. When we are hidden in the Lord, he protects us by providing us with wisdom, discernment, wise counsel, and most of all, the Holy Spirit to guide us.

We can go to God, give him our cares and concerns, and dance in peace with joy on our Rock as he rejoices of over us with singing. We can rest in him knowing that he is working all things out together for our good.

We can kiss the waves… the can authentically smile through adversity. We can be patient in affliction.
Joyful in the storms because we know that our God is with us.
We ought to be forever indebted to the booming waves that cause us to draw closer to our Lord.

How beautiful is that?

  1. Thanks. I needed every word of that today.

Have a thought to share? I'd love to hear it!
